I have this developing LOST theory. First, I think the egyptian stuff is super important. I think Richard Alpert wears guyliner because he is actually from ancient Egypt and it was normal for them to wear it then.
Second, I think ol smokie is Apep, this underworld snake thing that would spring up from the ground and bring back souls to the underworld. It’s description kind of matches up with Smokie. It feeds off of it’s own cries, and it cannot detect a living soul if the person is hiding amongst other living things (in the early season of LOST, the characters always jump into a bush to get away from Smokie, and it works).
So… about Jacob.. Hmmm.
I think Jacob is supposed to represent Osiris and old dude on the beach with Jacob is supposed to be Set. Set is the patron of chaos, evil, darkness, strength, war, and conflicts. He also kills Osiris. Sometimes he is depicted with a crocodile head.
Osiris is the patron of the dead and fertility. He is the god that judges the souls of the dead. This is all random ideas, but I think maybe something from all of that will be important? At least I hope so, because I think the Egyptian stuff is the most interesting.
